Financing ABA Therapy

How Families Pay for ABA Therapy

Most NJ families paying for ABA therapy use health insurance, and their share depends on the plan’s deductible, copays or coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximum. TEAM Behavioral Consultants helps you understand those costs before therapy begins, and we are happy to work with you on a payment plan.

Because every ABA program is individualized — different goals, different weekly hours — there is no single price for ABA therapy. The reliable answer to “what will this cost us?” comes from your child’s recommended plan and your insurance benefits, and we will help you work it out.

What Affects the Cost of ABA Therapy

  • Your child's recommended weekly therapy hours
  • How long treatment continues
  • Your plan's annual deductible
  • Copays or coinsurance for each session
  • Your annual out-of-pocket maximum
  • Whether we are in network with your plan
  • The hours your plan authorizes
  • Whether your plan is fully insured or self-funded

Ways to Pay for ABA Therapy

  1. Health insurance — we work with Horizon, Aetna, United Behavioral Health, Optum, Evernorth, Amerigroup, Cigna, Medicaid and TRICARE. See how coverage and verification work.
  2. NJ FamilyCare (Medicaid) — since April 2020, NJ FamilyCare has covered medically necessary ABA therapy for members under 21. We accept Medicaid through some plans; ask us about yours.
  3. TRICARE — military families can access ABA through TRICARE’s Autism Care Demonstration.
  4. HSA or FSA — if you have a health savings account or flexible spending account, ask your plan administrator whether your ABA copays, coinsurance and deductible can be paid from it.
  5. Payment plans — if out-of-pocket costs are a concern, talk with us. We will work with you on a payment plan that fits your family’s budget.
  6. Private pay — families without ABA coverage, or who choose not to use insurance, can pay privately. Contact us for rates.

Keeping Costs Predictable

A few steps help avoid surprises once therapy is under way:

  1. Verify benefits before you start. We check your coverage and explain your costs before the first session.
  2. Know your out-of-pocket maximum. Once you reach it, your plan typically pays 100% of covered in-network services for the rest of the plan year.
  3. Watch your plan year. Deductibles usually reset at the start of each plan year, so costs can change in January or at your employer’s renewal date.
  4. Tell us about changes. A new job, a new plan or a change in coverage means we should verify your benefits again.
  5. Ask questions. Our team can explain terms like deductible, coinsurance and prior authorization in plain language.

Questions About Paying for ABA Therapy

How much does ABA therapy cost in New Jersey?

There is no single price, because every ABA program is individualized. Your cost depends on your child's recommended weekly hours and your insurance benefits — deductible, copays or coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximum. We verify your benefits and explain what you can expect to pay before therapy begins.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. If out-of-pocket costs are a concern, talk with us and we will work with you on a payment plan that fits your family's budget.

Can I use an HSA or FSA to pay for ABA therapy?

Ask your plan administrator. Eligibility for health savings account and flexible spending account funds is set by IRS rules and by your plan, and your administrator can confirm whether your ABA copays, coinsurance and deductible qualify.

What if my insurance doesn't cover ABA therapy?

Contact us. We can check out-of-network benefits, look at whether NJ FamilyCare may be an option for your child, and talk through private-pay rates and payment plans.
